Banquete Independent School District
Board of Trustees

-
The board of trustees is elected by the citizens of the district to represent the community’s commitment to a strong educational program for the district’s children. Board members are elected in even numbered years and serve four-year terms. Board members serve without compensation, must be qualified voters, and must reside in the district.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A SCHOOL BOARD?
Local school boards play a vital role in shaping the direction and success of their school districts. Their responsibilities generally fall into five key areas:-
Establishing Goals and Priorities: Setting strategic goals for student achievement and regularly monitoring progress toward those goals.
-
Policy Development and Oversight: Adopting district policies and reviewing them to ensure effectiveness and alignment with district needs.
-
Superintendent Leadership: Hiring, supporting, and evaluating the superintendent to ensure strong and effective district leadership.
-
Financial Stewardship: Adopting the annual budget and setting the local tax rate to support district operations.
-
Community Engagement: Serving as a bridge between the district and the community, maintaining open communication and transparency.
BOARD MEETING SCHEDULE AND NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES
The Board of Trustees generally meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Meeting times or locations may be adjusted when high attendance is anticipated. If no business necessitates a meeting in a given month, the regular meeting may be canceled.
Special meetings may be called as needed. Written notice of all regular and special meetings will be posted on the district’s website and at the central office no less than 72 hours prior to the scheduled start time. The notice will include the date, time, location, and agenda items for each meeting.
In the event of an emergency, a meeting may be held with a minimum of two hours’ notice, as permitted by law.

Mrs. Nikki Cantu
My name is Nikki Cantu. (My first name is Anya, but I've been called Nikki my entire life.) After high school, I spent 4 years in the Navy and then earned my Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies from The University of Pan American. My husband and I have six kids, three boys and three girls. Our two oldest have already graduated from Banquete I.S.D., and our four younger kids are still students here. I've been an active member of the Banquete Athletic Booster Club for six years, and now I'm excited to serve our community as a member of the school board.
